Tutorial Two: Digital Camera Use and Applications

"A new technology is rarely superior to an old one in every feature". Briefly discuss this statement in relation to digital camera technology. What would you consider to be some of the pluses and minuses digital camera technology holds in relation to more traditional film based cameras.

I think there are both benefits and disadvantages of newer digital cameras in comparison to traditional film cameras.

Benefits include:
Smaller, more conveniently sized. Can take anywhere, will fit in your bag easily.
User can see the pictures almost instantly after taking them, there is no processing time. This means photos can be re-taken if they were unsuccessful.
Come in a variety of colours, easy to operate.
Affordable and therefore accessible to most people.
Only need to buy once- no need to replace film, and some digital cameras will come with a rechargeable battery, so no need to replace batteries.
Easy upload of digital cameras to your computer, Internet communication pages e.g. facebook.
Most record sound and video, as well as taking photos (multifunctional)

Disadvantages include:
Because digital cameras are almost 'disposable'- generally cost more to fix than to buy a whole new camera, they are often not as well made as some traditional film cameras.
Photo albums are becoming extinct! no need to print off photos when they are on your computer.
Digital cameras often don't have as many technical options as traditional cameras.
Digital photos are more susceptible to manipulation than traditional photos.

List some ways that digital images can be stored, transferred and manipulated using other communications technology.

Digital images can be stored on computer hard drives, flash drives, CD's and on mobile phones. They can be transferred via mobile phones (pxt), email, photo sharing sites such as Flickr, facebook or Myspace.
Digital images can be manipulated via computer programmes such as Photoshop, on photo sharing sites such as the ones listed above, or using video programmes such as Ulead. There are many image manipulating programmes available on the Internet.

Given the prevalence of image capturing devices, and thinking about the issues discussed in tutorial one, consider what sort of ethical issues may arise with their use.

Depending on what you are using the digital image for, manipulation of a digital image can result in ethical issues.
e.g. taking photos without permission- breech of privacy
sharing photos without permission
manipulating photos, making them fictitious- is the photo intended to be factual or for entertainment?

In Occupational Therapy practice, Digital imaging may encounter some of these problems. When taking images within an intervention, permission should be sought from the client to take photos. These photos should not be shared or used for any other purpose than stated, unless permission has been granted. Photos generally would not be manipulated in OT practice.

Briefly discuss some of the ways that digital images could, or are, being used in Occupational Therapy practice.
  • Follow the progress of a client in pictorial form
  • provide a client with correct techniques in pictorial form e.g take photos of your client in a correct posture for them to take home as a reminder.
  • A method to review a client's performance in a session (video camera)

Provide a brief summary of the services offered by flickr.com

Flickr is a website available to everyone which provides a place to manage, store, share and edit photos. It is free to create a flickr account and you can also keep in touch with friends and family though the site.

Name one other photo storage website which offers a service similar to Flickr.com

photobucket.com

Explain what the difference is between a digital and an optical zoom

Digital zoom simply crops a photo to a smaller size whereas optical zoom changes the focal length and magnification of a photo. Optical zoom maintains the clarity of the photo, whereas digital zoom decreases the quality of the image as it has been manipulated.

Explain what it is meant by the term megapixel

digital photos are made up of pixels- these are tiny squares of colour, so small that they blur together in a photo to create an image. A megapixel is one million pixels.

now I am going to attempt to upload some photos via Flickr!!
